Shostakovich: Festive Overture Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major Bernstein: Chichester Psalms Borodin: Polevetsian Dances
We cap off our season with a jaunt around the Russian countryside. “Russian Nights” will open with the “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich and its fullness of fire and brilliance.
Guest pianist Sean Chen will dazzle the audience with his virtuosic playing of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major. Chen won the Crystal Award at the 14th Annual Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 2013, and has been hailed as a “charismatic rising star with an exceptional ability to connect with an audience combined with an easy virtuosity.”
Also joining the orchestra on our “Russian Nights” will be the Symphony of Southeast Texas Chorus under the direction of Dr. James Han. They will perform Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” with its wonderfully tricky rhythms and dramatic dynamics making it fun for the performers and the audience.
The last piece of the evening closes out the season in spectacular fashion with the “Polovetsian Dances” of Aleksandr Borodin and its recognizable melodies and themes.
Co-sponsored by Baptist Hospital; Mr. Chen’s appearance made possible by Regina Rogers
