We invite you to get to know some of your orchestra musicians and celebrate Cinco de Mayo at “SOST On the Town” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 in the Edison Plaza Lobby. This second annual concert experience takes the musicians out of the concert hall for an evening of great music, tasty treats from Green Light Kitchen and an added Mexican flair for a festive evening. The SOST Percussion ensemble will fill the room with the stimulating sounds of its interesting instruments.
“This concert will feature a new taste of some of our percussion instruments,” said SOST Principal Percussionist Jamie Strawther. “We will highlight the different sounds that can come from our instruments and demonstrate the variety of music we can perform. From loud and rhythmic to soft and pretty, we’ll show the wide range of styles that can be expressed through percussion music.”
Strawther also added that percussion music keeps the musicians on their toes and always moving. “There is a great visual aspect to a percussion performance that I think the audience will love,” he said.
Some of the pieces featured will include “Afta-Stuba” by Mark Ford and “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre. The ensemble will also add some Mexican beats to the evening for a grand celebration of Cinco de Mayo.
The concert will also feature a video presentation weaved throughout the musical selections illustrating each musician’s background and sharing some personal stories.
Seating for “SOST On the Town” is limited. Tickets are $10 each and go on sale April 1. To purchase tickets contact the Symphony office at (409) 892-2257.
