All the world is sound or vibration. From bees humming to the sound of a rainstorm\, the same vibrations that make music surround us in nature. Great composers often used nature as the backdrop for their works\, such as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons or Johannes Brahms c minor Symphony. \nIn our education program\, we will look at how various composers use the sounds of the orchestra to manifest the images of nature. The William Tell Overture takes us on through a storm\, to pastures of fields ending with the ever-familiar Lone Ranger gallop of horses at the end. Beethoven Pastoral Symphony looks at the thunderstorm elements in detail\, and the Ritual Fire Dance was used to worship the Fire God where Gypsies would form a large circle around their campfire at midnight to dance. Flight of the Bumble Bee is\, of course\, just the Flight of the Bumble Bee! \nOur concerto winners from 2020 and 2021 will be joining the orchestra. \nSeth Weeks\, 2020 Concerto winner\nEthan Williamson\, 2021 Concerto winner\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis year\, the concert will be videoed and released to area schools and educators. With an irrepressible curiosity and penchant for unusual repertoire\, she proves her versatility with a wide range in repertoire spanning from Bach and Scarlatti\, to Bernstein\, Gulda\, and Corigliano. \nFor an intense start of the 2020/21 season\, Claire paid homage to Beethoven’s anniversary with a compelling interpretation of his Pastorale symphony arranged for solo piano by Franz Liszt\, with concerts at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr and the Rheingau Musik Festival\, where her recital was recorded for T-Mobile‘s streaming platform MagentaMusik 360. After appearances as a piano duo with Alexei Volodin at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and the release of a new album with her Trio Machiavelli\, a major highlight is her Fall 2020 recital tour at the main halls of Berlin Philharmonie\, and Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. Later in the season\, a further exciting debut takes place in the “Great Performers Series” at New York‘s Lincoln Center. Among her orchestra engagements are dates with the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken\, Museumsorchester Frankfurt\, Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. With the Nordic Chamber Orchestra\, she will direct concertos of Mozart and Chopin from the keyboard. \n  \n \n  \n  \n

Due to COVID precautions\, we were unable the last 2 years to have an in-person concert for the area schools. We are thrilled to be able to continue the tradition of students coming to the Julie Rogers Theatre to hear the Symphony of Southeast Texas! \nLearning theory supports the strong relationship between math\, science and music\, so our outreach is to help bridge those learning centers with hope of creating an awareness and appreciation for great music. We want children to experience classical music and truly see and hear how exciting it can be! \nThis year’s program\, Through the Telescope\, takes a look at images from the Hubble Space Telescope and how music has interpreted space and its relationship to what the Hubble has uncovered. The heavens above have inspired artists\, writers\, and musicians for thousands of years. DESCRIPTION:Classic Series I\n \nEnduring Love\nSeptember 17\, 2022 7:30PM\n  \nStephenson     Fanfare for Democracy \nKorngold          Violin Concerto\, Lara St. John \nStrauss              Der Rosenkavalier Suite \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \nCelebrating our 70th continuous year of presenting great symphonic music\, fanfares signal the start of a new era!  What better way than to start each concert with a fanfare?  We begin this season with a new work\, composed by composer James Stephenson.  Stephenson’s music is enjoying popularity among orchestras and bands alike\, especially as he features lyrical melodies for solo instrumentalists.  Fanfare for Democracy was first performed by The United States Marine band at President Biden’s inauguration\, then after orchestrated for symphony orchestra\, opened the July 4th concert presented by The Boston Pops Orchestra.  A compelling combination of ceremonial signaling with lyrical melodies searching for harmony and peace\, this opening fanfare is a most appropriate signal! \nErnest Korngold’s violin concerto is a classic\, a charming piece that is at once accessible and reminiscent of the best of movie themes.  No direct quotes but his harmonies and sweeping melodies could have been set to the best cinemas of the post war epics. Who could have a better launch of a new era than by having Jascha Heifetz premiere your concerto? From an early age\, our featured artist Lara St. John has traveled the world\, starting that journey at the tender age of four she began travels from her homeland of Ontario\, to study with renown violin masters from Cleveland to New York\, Philadelphia\, onto Moscow returning to Ontario.  As a result of winning the Canada Council Stradivarius Prize\, she won the honor of playing the 1779 Salabue Guadagnini violin\, a two-year prize that became a permanent possession. \nOur concert concludes with a beloved lighthearted classic by Richard Strauss\, the suite from the comic opera\, Der Rosenkavalier Suite. Quite the contrast from Also sprach Zarathustra\, these themes include puzzling settings of deception\, lust\, and tomfoolery\, all set to magnificent waltzes and duets. DESCRIPTION:Classic Series II         \n \nFrench Connection\nNovember 12\, 2022 7:30PM\n  \nDukas                La Peri Fanfare \nSaint-Saëns     Piano Concerto No. 2\, op. 22\, g minor \nDaniel Hsu\, Piano \nDebussy            Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun \nStravinsky        Firebird Suite (1919 version) \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \n  \nConcert Sponsor: Rosine McFaddin Wilson \nGuest Artist Sponsor: Regina Rogers \n  \nPaul Dukas’ fanfare from the ballet La Peri was one of his best-known works\, along with his famous classic The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  A severe critic of his own works\, these two works were among those few he did not destroy.  He composed the one-act ballet\, without an overture\, yet finished the work with this fanfare.  His compositional style seemed in between Impressionism and Neo-classicism.  Heavily scored for brass\, it is no wonder that this fanfare was most frequently performed. \nSaint-Saëns’ second piano concerto is a classic example of how setting and musical norms can set the stage for a musical idea.  As a former organist\, Saint-Saëns had a great affinity with JS Bach\, especially his organ works.  Harmonics\, melodic line\, and textures all reflect his earliest musical impressions.  Yet\, the frivolity of French music makes a dramatic change in the second movement setting the stage for a tumultuous saltarello in typical sonata form.  This popular work is a command force piece for the concert pianist. Our featured artist this evening is Daniel Hsu\, the recent Bronze Medal winner of the Cliburn International Piano Competition.  One of the most rigorous of competitions\, Daniel won both the commissioned work and chamber music sections of the competition in 2017.  Prior to this was a successive string of international competitions\, including the Gilmore Young Artist\, the CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition and the Hamamatsu International Competition.  Such a series of successes led to concerti performances with many of the world’s major orchestras. \nOur concert continues with Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn. Perhaps one of the best-known pieces we hear today\, is probably least understood\, that is from the composer’s point of view. Debussy viewed this work\, inspired by poet Stephane Mallarme\, as a sensual setting in Greek and Roman mythology. He strays from the compositional forms of Brahms and Beethoven\, using other compositional techniques to create images\, moving the work through color imagery rather than thematic structure or sequence. \nIgor Stravinsky concludes our concert this evening with yet another sense of mysticism and folk tale\, this time from Russia. Firebird Suite takes the tale of Prince Ivan and his struggles to escape from the magical land dominated by Kaschei the Immortal. Ivan uses the Firebird to destroy the egg that is the source of Kaschei’s power.  Stravinsky uses compelling rhythms and tonal chords to build tension\, then as the egg is destroyed\, thunderous brass and percussion sound\, freeing the bird as promised. \nWhile these pieces were selected on their own merits\, it is amazing how this period of music drew mightily on myth and imagery of tales from long ago. \nDaniel Hsu – YouTube \nDaniel Hsu Bio \nCharacterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet…[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms\, questions\, and coaxes\,” American pianist Daniel Hsu is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship. He captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, and is also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist\, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition\, and bronze medalist of the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. \nA native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, Daniel Hsu began taking piano lessons at age 6 with Larisa Kagan. He made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra at age 8\, and his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area at age 9\, before being accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 10\, along with his two older siblings. Since then\, he has made his debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra (2016) and Carnegie Hall (2017) as part of the CAG Winners Series at Weill Recital Hall. He has appeared in recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts\, and Gilmore International Keyboard Festival\, as well as in Boston\, Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Denver\, Los Angeles\, Portland\, Pittsburgh\, and New York. Both he and the Brentano seemed to be channeling the same life force.” He regularly tours the United States with the Verona Quartet and in duo piano with his brother\, Andrew\, and appears frequently in chamber music festivals. \nDecca Gold released Daniel’s first album featuring live recordings from the Cliburn Competition of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata\, op. 110\, as well as his award-winning performance of Marc-André Hamelin’s Toccata on “L’homme armé.” He has also been featured in interviews and performances for WQXR\, APM’s Performance Today\, and Colorado Public Radio\, and was profiled as one to watch by International Piano magazine. \nNow 22 years old\, Daniel graduated from Curtis in spring 2019\, where he studied with Gary Graffman\, Robert McDonald\, and Eleanor Sokoloff. DESCRIPTION:Classics Series III\nLiberty: The Pursuit of Endurance\nFebruary 4\, 2023 7:30PM\n  \nDay     Lightspeed: Fanfare for Orchestra \nSchumann     Symphony No. 4\, op. 120\, d minor \nDvorak     Cello Concerto\, op. 104\, b minor \nJulian Schwarz\, cello \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \nAs we begin our concerts with distinctive fanfares\, Kevin Day’s Lightspeed is a fanfare for the entire orchestra rather than one section or another.  It displays distinctive characteristics that signal or call attention- the rationale of a great fanfare.  Our concert tonight reveals the splendor of full orchestral music\, expressing the many colors of each instrumental section.  What a fitting fanfare to prepare our audience for romantic symphonic music. \nSchumann’s Fourth Symphony is the subject of considerable opinion- which version\, what format\, and just how did this masterpiece help define the Romantic era.  Symphony number four had a couple of creations- the original in 1841 was lighter in nature; not as heavily orchestrated.  It was composed during the height of his art song period\, then due to its premiere of his first symphony\, not published for ten years.  Schumann’s later version defies the traditional symphonic movement form and is like a one movement format\, with tempi and harmonies much different than what one might expect. So\, our symphonic experience is quite different than expected\, yet lush with broad sweeping melodies reminiscent of the art songs which preceded this symphony. \nOur final work of the evening is yet another masterpiece that was the center of great discussion and is considered one of the finest and most difficult works for the instrument.  It is in a traditional format of three movements\, with the second movement a remembrance of his sister-in-law.  The final movement\, much like a rondo\, also reintroduces the themes of the previous movements with touching orchestrations behind the soloist. Probably one of the most recorded concerti for cello\, the Dvorak has been recorded by the great legends of cellists\, even recorded three different times by Yo-Yo Ma. \nThe Romantic period of symphonic music is marked by vigorous criticism which challenged the composer and also delayed their premieres.  Ironically\, our performance tonight was delayed by compromised travel plans due to Covid-19! \nOur soloist\, Julian Schwarz\, has grown up with music his entire life.  His father\, Gerard Schwarz was principal trumpeter of New York Philharmonic before becoming the music director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.  Like his father\, he champions the music of new composers\, both in traditional and new formats.  He has performed with orchestras around the world\, has created unique chamber groups\, and as a teacher\, is in residence at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in VA\, as well as a summer appointment at the Eastern Music Festival\, in Greensboro\, NC. \nSponsors: \n \n \n \nJulian Schwarz – YouTube \nJulian Schwarz Bio \nJulian Schwarz was born to a multigenerational musical family in 1991. In 2016 the Schwarz-Bournaki duo was awarded first prize at the inaugural Boulder International String Competition’s “The Art of Duo”\, and subsequently embarked on an extensive 10-recital tour of China in March 2017. Mr. Schwarz is a founding member of the New York based Frisson Ensemble (a mixed nonet of winds and strings)\, and the Mile-End Trio with violinist Jeff Multer and Ms. Bournaki. Please call the office for further information. \n \nBorn Robert Peabo Bryson on April 13\, 1951 in Greenville\, South Carolina\, this world renowned balladeer got his start as the lead singer of Al Freeman & The Upsetters and Moses Dillard & The Tex-Town Display. In 1976\, he released his debut LP\, “Peabo”\, on Atlanta’s Bullet/Bang label. Peabo composed nearly all the songs for this album (some with the great Thom Bell)\, in addition to a young Luther Vandross being among the background vocalists\, and sexy Black film star Tamara “Cleopatra Jones” Dobson showing him love on the back jacket. \nPeabo had back-to-back gold albums with Capitol Records\, Reaching for the Sky (1977) and Crosswinds (1978). The title tracks of these albums\, as well as the hit singles “Feel the Fire” and “I’m So Into You”\, truly penetrated the hearts of soul fans everywhere. During his relationship with Capitol\, Peabo collaborated with label mate and friend Natalie Cole for the 1979 project “We’re the Best of Friends”. A year later he worked with the phenomenal Roberta Flack for the double-LP “Live & More” (on Atlantic Records). Peabo delivered four more albums for Capitol before making a second\, even bigger album with Ms. Flack titled Born to Love\, a gold seller that featured the smash “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” (Top 5 R&B and #16 Pop). Peabo soon moved over to Elektra Records for four albums\, the second of which\, “Take No Prisoners” featured the crossover smash “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again” (Top 10 Pop and R&B). \nA return to Capitol in 1989 for the one-off album “All My Love”\, earned Peabo his first R&B #1 single with a remake of the late Al Wilson’s “Show & Tell”. He hit the top of the R&B charts a second time with the smash “Can You Stop The Rain”\, the title track of his R&B chart topping first of two albums for Columbia Records. \nIt was with the help of very famous Disney animated films that earned Peabo his two Grammys and two Oscars®. The first was 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” with international pop singer Celine Dion which also topped the pop chart. The very next year\, Peabo struck gold with a Grammy® and an Oscar® with Regina Belle for “A Whole New World” (Aladdin’s Theme) from Aladdin. The Ryman shows sold out nightly and received rave reviews\, and Barnett has wowed critics and audiences ever since with her concerts and recordings. \nBarnett’s critically lauded albums include I’ve Got a Right to Cry\, named the “Top Country Album” by Rolling Stone in the year of its release and produced by renowned Nashville Sound pioneer Owen Bradley\, who also produced Cline’s most loved chart-toppers (as well as producing Loretta Lynn\, Brenda Lee\, and k.d. lang). And Rolling Stone continued to honor this landmark album\, placing it in 2019 on two of its “best of” lists of seminal classic country works. \nWith a string of acclaimed country albums\, such as her self-titled Warner Bros. debut\, her Christmas celebration Winter Wonderland\, the Cline-inspired Sweet Dreams\, and I Can’t Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson (a tribute to her friend\, the late Country Music Hall of Fame member)\, there’s no doubt Barnett has mastered that genre and holds it dear to her heart. Her 2018 Strange Conversation album\, an Americana blend of roots\, pop\, and R&B tunes\, includes a duet with John Hiatt and a soulful rendition of Neil Sedaka’s My World Keeps Slipping Away\, which Sedaka himself sent to Barnett to record. AllMusic hails Strange Conversation as the “richest record of her career: surprising\, lively\, and deeply felt\,” and The Philadelphia Inquirer\, which listed Strange Conversation among the best country/roots albums of 2018\, notes that Barnett “takes a disparate collection of pop\, soul\, and rock numbers and makes a riveting personal statement.” \nAs further testament to her diversity\, Barnett sang on the SpongeBob SquarePants album The Best Day Ever (sharing the spotlight with the likes of Brian Wilson\, Tommy Ramone\, and Flaco Jimenez) and often incorporates a Great American Songbook standard or two into her live shows. When asked about her favorite composer\, Barnett’s as likely to cite Cole Porter or George Gershwin as she is Willie Nelson or Dolly Parton.\nIn fact\, along the lines of highlighting Barnett’s range\, her 2020 A Nashville Songbook\, an album of reimagined\, multi-generational pop and country gems produced by Fred Mollin (producer of Johnny Mathis\, Kris Kristofferson\, Jimmy Webb\, etc.)\, was inspired by Barnett’s popular “Nashville Songbook” concert. \nEvery Star Above\, Barnett’s most recent album (also produced by Mollin)\, celebrates and reworks selections from Billie Holiday’s Lady In Satin\, with original arrangements by the late legend Sammy Nestico. Variety magazine named Every Star Above one of the best albums of 2021. \nBarnett is equally as comfortable on the Grand Ole Opry and stages with symphony orchestras\, having recently performed solo concerts with the Nashville Symphony\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, and the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast highlighting her “Nashville Songbook” repertoire. Barnett made her New York City cabaret debut at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2019 with an acoustic version of her “Nashville Songbook.” \nBarnett’s music has been featured in many major film and television soundtracks (most recently\, in The CW Network’s series “The Flash”)\, including projects starring Clint Eastwood\, Tommy Lee Jones\, Martin Sheen\, Reese Witherspoon\, Matthew Broderick\, Sigourney Weaver\, Ellen Burstyn\, Bill Paxton\, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Besides soundtrack work\, Barnett often contributes tracks to other types of musical compilations\, and she has appeared on “The Tonight Show\,” “The Late Show\,” “CBS Sunday Morning\,” PBS’s “Sessions at West 54th\,” PBS’s “Bluegrass Underground\,” and numerous other programs. \nIn 2020\, Barnett came full circle with her East Tennessee roots. She joined a select group of music luminaries running the gamut from Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift in being honored by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development with a Tennessee Music Pathways marker. Whether playing baroque piccolo trumpet or interpreting works commissioned especially for him\, his artistry has been enthusiastically enjoyed inside of the United States and in such countries as France\, Spain\, Germany\, England\, Greece\, Romania\, Japan\, Taiwan\, and Korea. He has been praised by music critics from Fanfare Magazine\, American Record Guide\, Records International Catalog\, and other international publications for his evocative interpretation\, impeccable virtuosity\, and beauty of sound. \nA graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music\, Rodney Marsalis has worked under the guidance of world-renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein\, Michael Tilson Thomas\, Gerard Schwarz\, James DePreist\, John Williams\, Jesus Lopez- Cobos and Christopher Hogwood. He was awarded a fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center where he was invited to return for a second summer during which he was awarded the Seiji Ozawa Award for Outstanding Musicianship. \nMr. Marsalis was born in New Orleans\, Louisiana where he began his musical studies at the age of six. When he was eleven years of age\, he began taking classical trumpet lessons with his cousin\, Wynton Marsalis. Referred to as a “trumpet prodigy\,” his solo debut was at the age of fifteen with the New Orleans Symphony. After having won various solo competitions\, he received national attention at the age of nineteen performing as soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has also performed as soloist with the San Diego Symphony\, the Tenerife Symphony\, the Orquestra Sinfonica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya\, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and many orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. \nMr. Marsalis has made several world premiere recordings including “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” (Albany Records) by Adolphus Hailstork and “In Our Own House”(Albany Records) by composer Alvin Singleton with saxophonist Branford Marsalis. \nIn 1998 Rodney Marsalis made the premiere and critically acclaimed recording of Franz Waxman’s “Carmen Fantasy for Trumpet and Orchestra” with conductor Lawrence Foster on the Koch International record label. \nRodney’s debut solo trumpet CD “Spirit of the Trumpeter” (Albany Records) has been dubbed as a “best seller”. It is a compilation of some of the most popular recital works for trumpet and piano. Regarding “Spirit of the Trumpeter\,” former cornet virtuoso and renown conductor Gerard Schwarz says\, “Rodney is a superb trumpet player and musician. I have no doubt that this CD will make an important addition to the catalogue of sublime trumpet performances.” \nIn the course of his more than twenty years as an orchestral musician\, Mr. Marsalis was the winner of several national and international competitions for titled orchestral chairs including positions with The New Orleans Symphony\, The Colorado Symphony Orchestra\, The San Diego Symphony Orchestra\, The Orquestra Sinfonica de Tenerife\, The Barcelona Symphony\, and The Richmond Symphony. After completing a one-year trial period he was awarded the Principal Trumpet position with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. During his tenure as Principal Trumpet with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra Mr. Marsalis was appointed head of the trumpet department at the Escuela Superior de Musica de Catalunya (ESMUC) Spain’s leading music conservatory. He has recently been invited to give master classes at the Julliard School\, The North Carolina School for the Arts\, the National Trumpet Competition\, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. He has also been invited to teach at the Eastern Music Festival and the Interlochen Music Academy. \nRodney can be heard as Soloist and Principal Trumpet on more than thirty different recordings with labels such as Decca\, Naxos\, Koch International Classics\, and Albany Records. \n  \n
