SUMMARY:French Connection
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series II         \n \nFrench Connection\nNovember 12\, 2022 7:30PM\n  \nDukas                La Peri Fanfare \nSaint-Saëns     Piano Concerto No. 2\, op. 22\, g minor \nDaniel Hsu\, Piano \nDebussy            Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun \nStravinsky        Firebird Suite (1919 version) \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \n  \nConcert Sponsor: Rosine McFaddin Wilson \nGuest Artist Sponsor: Regina Rogers \n  \nPaul Dukas’ fanfare from the ballet La Peri was one of his best-known works\, along with his famous classic The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  A severe critic of his own works\, these two works were among those few he did not destroy.  He composed the one-act ballet\, without an overture\, yet finished the work with this fanfare.  His compositional style seemed in between Impressionism and Neo-classicism.  Heavily scored for brass\, it is no wonder that this fanfare was most frequently performed. \nSaint-Saëns’ second piano concerto is a classic example of how setting and musical norms can set the stage for a musical idea.  As a former organist\, Saint-Saëns had a great affinity with JS Bach\, especially his organ works.  Harmonics\, melodic line\, and textures all reflect his earliest musical impressions.  Yet\, the frivolity of French music makes a dramatic change in the second movement setting the stage for a tumultuous saltarello in typical sonata form.  This popular work is a command force piece for the concert pianist. Our featured artist this evening is Daniel Hsu\, the recent Bronze Medal winner of the Cliburn International Piano Competition.  One of the most rigorous of competitions\, Daniel won both the commissioned work and chamber music sections of the competition in 2017.  Prior to this was a successive string of international competitions\, including the Gilmore Young Artist\, the CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition and the Hamamatsu International Competition.  Such a series of successes led to concerti performances with many of the world’s major orchestras. \nOur concert continues with Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn. Perhaps one of the best-known pieces we hear today\, is probably least understood\, that is from the composer’s point of view. Debussy viewed this work\, inspired by poet Stephane Mallarme\, as a sensual setting in Greek and Roman mythology. He strays from the compositional forms of Brahms and Beethoven\, using other compositional techniques to create images\, moving the work through color imagery rather than thematic structure or sequence. \nIgor Stravinsky concludes our concert this evening with yet another sense of mysticism and folk tale\, this time from Russia. Firebird Suite takes the tale of Prince Ivan and his struggles to escape from the magical land dominated by Kaschei the Immortal. Ivan uses the Firebird to destroy the egg that is the source of Kaschei’s power.  Stravinsky uses compelling rhythms and tonal chords to build tension\, then as the egg is destroyed\, thunderous brass and percussion sound\, freeing the bird as promised. \nWhile these pieces were selected on their own merits\, it is amazing how this period of music drew mightily on myth and imagery of tales from long ago. \nDaniel Hsu – YouTube \nDaniel Hsu Bio \nCharacterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet…[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms\, questions\, and coaxes\,” American pianist Daniel Hsu is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship. He captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, and is also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist\, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition\, and bronze medalist of the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. \nA native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, Daniel Hsu began taking piano lessons at age 6 with Larisa Kagan. He made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra at age 8\, and his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area at age 9\, before being accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 10\, along with his two older siblings. Since then\, he has made his debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra (2016) and Carnegie Hall (2017) as part of the CAG Winners Series at Weill Recital Hall. He has appeared in recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts\, and Gilmore International Keyboard Festival\, as well as in Boston\, Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Denver\, Los Angeles\, Portland\, Pittsburgh\, and New York. A sensitive and keen collaborator\, Daniel has performed with the Tokyo\, North Carolina\, Grand Rapids\, Anchorage\, New Haven\, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras\, working alongside conductors Leonard Slatkin\, Nicholas McGegan\, Cristian Măcelaru\, Ruth Reinhardt\, Marcelo Lehninger\, Eugene Tzigane\, and Stilian Kirov. \nRecent and upcoming highlights include his debuts with the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra with Hannu Lintu\, Eugene Symphony with Francesco Lecce-Chong\, and Jacksonville Symphony with Courtney Lewis; chamber tours with Curtis-on-Tour (Europe) and the Verona Quartet (United States); and recitals across the United States and Japan. His Boston debut recital in spring 2019 was hailed as a “powerful\, thoughtful\, and sensitive program… this deeply inquisitive artist’s inner probing brought fresh meaning to great warhorses\, reaching well beyond his stunning mastery of technical difficulties” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). \nDaniel’s chamber music performance with the Brentano String Quartet at the Cliburn Competition earned him the Steven de Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music. The Dallas Morning News praised “his impassioned\, eloquently detailed Franck Quintet\,” proclaiming it to be “a boldly molded account\, with a natural feeling for the rise and fall of intensity\, the give and take of rubato. Both he and the Brentano seemed to be channeling the same life force.” He regularly tours the United States with the Verona Quartet and in duo piano with his brother\, Andrew\, and appears frequently in chamber music festivals. \nDecca Gold released Daniel’s first album featuring live recordings from the Cliburn Competition of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata\, op. 110\, as well as his award-winning performance of Marc-André Hamelin’s Toccata on “L’homme armé.” He has also been featured in interviews and performances for WQXR\, APM’s Performance Today\, and Colorado Public Radio\, and was profiled as one to watch by International Piano magazine. \nNow 22 years old\, Daniel graduated from Curtis in spring 2019\, where he studied with Gary Graffman\, Robert McDonald\, and Eleanor Sokoloff. He is a Marvel film buff and enjoys programming—he contributed to the creation of Workflow (now known as Siri Shortcuts)\, which won the 2015 Apple Design Award and was acquired by the tech giant in 2017. \nADDITIONAL 2017 CLIBURN AWARDS:\nSteven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music\nBeverley Taylor Smith Award for the Best Performance of a New Work \n  \n

SUMMARY:Liberty: The Pursuit of Endurance
DESCRIPTION:Classics Series III\nLiberty: The Pursuit of Endurance\nFebruary 4\, 2023 7:30PM\n  \nDay     Lightspeed: Fanfare for Orchestra \nSchumann     Symphony No. 4\, op. 120\, d minor \nDvorak     Cello Concerto\, op. 104\, b minor \nJulian Schwarz\, cello \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \nAs we begin our concerts with distinctive fanfares\, Kevin Day’s Lightspeed is a fanfare for the entire orchestra rather than one section or another.  It displays distinctive characteristics that signal or call attention- the rationale of a great fanfare.  Our concert tonight reveals the splendor of full orchestral music\, expressing the many colors of each instrumental section.  What a fitting fanfare to prepare our audience for romantic symphonic music. \nSchumann’s Fourth Symphony is the subject of considerable opinion- which version\, what format\, and just how did this masterpiece help define the Romantic era.  Symphony number four had a couple of creations- the original in 1841 was lighter in nature; not as heavily orchestrated.  It was composed during the height of his art song period\, then due to its premiere of his first symphony\, not published for ten years.  Schumann’s later version defies the traditional symphonic movement form and is like a one movement format\, with tempi and harmonies much different than what one might expect. So\, our symphonic experience is quite different than expected\, yet lush with broad sweeping melodies reminiscent of the art songs which preceded this symphony. \nOur final work of the evening is yet another masterpiece that was the center of great discussion and is considered one of the finest and most difficult works for the instrument.  It is in a traditional format of three movements\, with the second movement a remembrance of his sister-in-law.  The final movement\, much like a rondo\, also reintroduces the themes of the previous movements with touching orchestrations behind the soloist. Probably one of the most recorded concerti for cello\, the Dvorak has been recorded by the great legends of cellists\, even recorded three different times by Yo-Yo Ma. \nThe Romantic period of symphonic music is marked by vigorous criticism which challenged the composer and also delayed their premieres.  Ironically\, our performance tonight was delayed by compromised travel plans due to Covid-19! \nOur soloist\, Julian Schwarz\, has grown up with music his entire life.  His father\, Gerard Schwarz was principal trumpeter of New York Philharmonic before becoming the music director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.  Like his father\, he champions the music of new composers\, both in traditional and new formats.  He has performed with orchestras around the world\, has created unique chamber groups\, and as a teacher\, is in residence at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in VA\, as well as a summer appointment at the Eastern Music Festival\, in Greensboro\, NC. \nSponsors: \n \n \n \nJulian Schwarz – YouTube \nJulian Schwarz Bio \nJulian Schwarz was born to a multigenerational musical family in 1991. Heralded from a young age as a cellist destined to rank among the greatest of the 21st century\, Julian’s powerful tone\, effortless virtuosity\, and extraordinarily large color palette are hallmarks of his style. \nAfter making his concerto debut at the age of 11 with the Seattle Symphony and his father Gerard Schwarz on the podium\, he made his US touring debut with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2010. Since being awarded first prize at the inaugural Schoenfeld International String Competition in 2013\, he has led an active career as soloist\, performing with the symphony orchestras of Annapolis\, Boise\, Bozeman\, Buffalo\, Charlotte\, Columbus\, Des Moines\, Hartford\, Jacksonville\, Louisville\, Memphis\, Modesto\, Omaha\, Puerto Rico\, Richmond\, Rochester\, San Antonio\, Sarasota\, Seattle\, Syracuse\, Toledo\, Tucson\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, Wichita\, and Winston-Salem\, among others. Internationally\, he made his Australian debut with the Queensland Symphony\, his Mexican debuts with the Boca del Rio Philharmonic in Veracruz and the Mexico City Philharmonic with frequent collaborator Jorge Mester\, and his Hong Kong debut at the Intimacy of Creativity Festival. He has also appeared at the Salzburg Mozarteum\, and the Verbier festival in Switzerland. \nAs a chamber musician\, Mr. Schwarz performs extensively in recital with pianist Marika Bournaki. In 2016 the Schwarz-Bournaki duo was awarded first prize at the inaugural Boulder International String Competition’s “The Art of Duo”\, and subsequently embarked on an extensive 10-recital tour of China in March 2017. Mr. Schwarz is a founding member of the New York based Frisson Ensemble (a mixed nonet of winds and strings)\, and the Mile-End Trio with violinist Jeff Multer and Ms. Bournaki. He performs frequently at Bargemusic in Brooklyn with violinist Mark Peskanov\, on the Frankly Music Series in Milwaukee with violinist Frank Almond\, as a member of the Palladium Chamber Players in St Petersburg FL\, and has appeared at the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival\, Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival\, and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. In addition\, he is the co-coordinator of chamber music at Eastern Music Festival\, running programming for the Tuesday evening chamber music series. \nJulian Schwarz is an ardent supporter of new music and has premiered concertos by Richard Danielpour and Samuel Jones (recorded with the All Star Orchestra for public television in 2012\, subsequently released as a DVD on Naxos). In the 17-18 season\, he gave the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s first Cello Concerto with a consortium of six orchestras. Other premieres include recital works by Paul Frucht\, Scott Ordway\, Jonathan Cziner\, Gavin Fraser\, Alex Weiser\, Ofer Ben-Amots\, and the US Premiere of Dobrinka Tabakova’s Cello Concerto. On record\, he has recorded Bright Sheng’s “Northern Lights” for Naxos\, the complete cello/piano works by Ernest Bloch for the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music\, and an album of concertos with the Seattle Symphony. \nA devoted teacher\, Mr. Schwarz serves as Assistant Professor of Cello at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University (Winchester\, VA) and on the artist faculty of New York University (NYU Steinhardt). He spends his summers teaching and performing at the Eastern Music Festival (Greensboro\, NC). Past faculty appointments include artist-in-residence at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (Nova Scotia\, Canada)\, faculty teaching assistant to Joel Krosnick at The Juilliard School\, and artist-In-residence at the pianoSonoma Festival. \nBorn in Seattle\, WA\, Mr. Schwarz studied at the Academy of Music Northwest and the Lakeside School. He continued to the Colburn School in Los Angeles under Ronald Leonard\, and then moved to New York City to study with mentor Joel Krosnick at The Juilliard School (BM 14\, MM 16). Other influential teachers include the late David Tonkonogui\, the late Toby Saks\, Lynn Harrell\, Neal Cary\, and chamber music mentors Andre Roy\, Arnold Steinhardt\, Jonathan Feldman\, Toby Appel and Paul Coletti. Julian plays a Neapolitan cello made by Gennaro Gagliano in 1743 and multiple American bows made by the late Paul Martin Siefried. He is an active contributor to Strings Magazine’s Artist Blog\, edits cello editions for Carl Fischer Publishing\, and sits on the music committee of the National Arts Club. A Pirastro artist\, he endorses and plays the “Perpetual” medium and edition sets of cello strings. Julian also proudly endorses Melos Rosin.

SUMMARY:A Whole New World
DESCRIPTION:Pops 2\nA Whole New World with Peabo Bryson\nMarch 4\, 2023 7:30 PM \nIt is with great regret that we inform you that Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis\, Jr. will not be with us for next Saturday’s concert. Mr. Davis is under doctor’s orders not to travel for the immediate future. Fortunately\, Peabo Bryson is able to perform with SOST in their stead. All tickets will be honored for the March 4th concert. Please call the office for further information. \n \nBorn Robert Peabo Bryson on April 13\, 1951 in Greenville\, South Carolina\, this world renowned balladeer got his start as the lead singer of Al Freeman & The Upsetters and Moses Dillard & The Tex-Town Display. In 1976\, he released his debut LP\, “Peabo”\, on Atlanta’s Bullet/Bang label. Peabo composed nearly all the songs for this album (some with the great Thom Bell)\, in addition to a young Luther Vandross being among the background vocalists\, and sexy Black film star Tamara “Cleopatra Jones” Dobson showing him love on the back jacket. \nPeabo had back-to-back gold albums with Capitol Records\, Reaching for the Sky (1977) and Crosswinds (1978). The title tracks of these albums\, as well as the hit singles “Feel the Fire” and “I’m So Into You”\, truly penetrated the hearts of soul fans everywhere. During his relationship with Capitol\, Peabo collaborated with label mate and friend Natalie Cole for the 1979 project “We’re the Best of Friends”. A year later he worked with the phenomenal Roberta Flack for the double-LP “Live & More” (on Atlantic Records). Peabo delivered four more albums for Capitol before making a second\, even bigger album with Ms. Flack titled Born to Love\, a gold seller that featured the smash “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” (Top 5 R&B and #16 Pop). Peabo soon moved over to Elektra Records for four albums\, the second of which\, “Take No Prisoners” featured the crossover smash “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again” (Top 10 Pop and R&B). \nA return to Capitol in 1989 for the one-off album “All My Love”\, earned Peabo his first R&B #1 single with a remake of the late Al Wilson’s “Show & Tell”. He hit the top of the R&B charts a second time with the smash “Can You Stop The Rain”\, the title track of his R&B chart topping first of two albums for Columbia Records. \nIt was with the help of very famous Disney animated films that earned Peabo his two Grammys and two Oscars®. The first was 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” with international pop singer Celine Dion which also topped the pop chart. The very next year\, Peabo struck gold with a Grammy® and an Oscar® with Regina Belle for “A Whole New World” (Aladdin’s Theme) from Aladdin. Since these two milestones\, he has been even more sought after as a guest vocalist and duet partner\, resulting in work with Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga on “We Kiss in the Shadows” (#1 on the Classical Crossover chart from a new recording of “The King and I” score) and Kenny G’s “By The Time This Night is Over” (from the chart topping Contemporary Jazz CD\, Breathless. \nPeabo has since also starred on stage in the lead role of “Raisin\,” as The Wizard in “The Wiz” and was featured in the Michigan Opera’s 100th anniversary production of “Porgy & Bess.” He also released a whopping three Christmas CDs\, lovingly filled with music he’s performed for several years running in the annual touring holiday music extravaganza\, The Colors of Christmas. \nAs Peabo continues to make feel good music and sing about love\, he encourages fans of classic R&B to have their voices heard. \nTickets: $36-$78 \nGet Tickets \nSponsors: \n \n  \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3DtNcw_cNo \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fanfare and Fortitude
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series IV\nFanfare and Fortitude\nApril 1\, 2023 7:30PM\n \n  \nStrauss              Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare \nRespighi           Ancient Airs and Dances No. 2 \nOrff                    Carmina Burana \nfeaturing the SOST Chorus\, Lamar University Choir\, Les Petites Voix (a children’s choir) and soloists Abigail Dueppen\, Blas Canedo-González and Steven Brennfleck \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nTickets: $33-$57 \nGet Tickets \n  \nConcert Sponsor: \n      \nGuest Artist Sponsor: Sandra Clark \n  \nRichard Strauss began our season with his Rosenkavalier Suite and kicks off the final concert with his Fanfare for the Vienna Philharmonic.  One of their favorite composers\, this short piece was composed and dedicated to the orchestra to begin the grand ball that raised funds for the musicians’ pension fund.  A triumphant work that announced the matron of the ball\, it has been played every year since!  While we don’t have a ball\, SOST is pleased to conclude this Anniversary season with a majestic fanfare\, followed by the grandest of symphonic pieces\, Carmina Burana. \nBefore the heavens open in our last epic of the season\, Maestro Tipton treats us to gentler symphonic movements of lute dances from Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances.  Orchestrated to give a great contrast from fanfares to the bombastic Carmina\, it is a delicate touch that calls some of the lighter movements of the Orff to mind. \nSo\, we end our celebration with one of the grandest productions of Symphonic literature. SUMMARY:Mandy Barnett's Nashville Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Pops 1                         \nMandy Barnett’s Nashville Songbook \nThe “Nashville Songbook” is a collection of songs that made Nashville famous as “Music City”—some of the most influential and iconic country and pop standards ever written\, originally recorded by artists as diverse as Roy Orbison\, Patsy Cline\, Elvis Presley\, Tammy Wynette\, Hank Williams\, Johnny Cash\, Eddy Arnold\, The Everly Brothers\, Brenda Lee\, and more\, and written by the likes of Harlan Howard\, Hank Cochran\, Willie Nelson\, Don Gibson\, Cindy Walker\, etc. \nMandy Barnett’s pure\, commanding voice and artistry make these songs her very own. Spend an enchanting night of timeless music with one of today’s premier vocalists with her “Nashville Songbook” show that appeals to music fans of all types—who will undoubtedly want to sing along to some of the best-loved tunes of all time! Barnett first unveiled her “Nashville Songbook” orchestral concert with the Nashville Symphony in 2016\, in celebration of the Symphony’s 70th anniversary. \nSince then\, Barnett has teamed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast for “Nashville Songbook” concerts. And Barnett recently made her cabaret debut at Feinstein’s/54 Below in NYC with her “Nashville Songbook” acoustic version. It’s no accident that Barnett continues to pay tribute to the “Nashville Songbook.” Barnett has a deep connection to the songs—to the artists who recorded them and the songwriters who penned them. Barnett grew up in East Tennessee and came to Nashville frequently as a child and teenager to record and perform. During that time\, she met many legendary country and pop artists and songwriters. Mandy is pleased to have the opportunity to honor these icons at her “Nashville Songbook” show! \nGet Tickets \nSponsored by: \n \nVideo: \nMandy Barnett – The Nashville Songbook EPK (vimeo.com) \n \nSpotify Link \nBio: \nGrand Ole Opry member Mandy Barnett\, one of Nashville’s enduring musical treasures who has showcased her mesmerizing voice on stages across the globe\, started singing at five years-old. She has been singing since.\nBarnett’s style is rooted in the classic country and pop crooning of iconic singers and timeless sounds. She delves into a song with a keen interpretative sense\, getting right down to its emotional core and rendering a powerhouse performance through her “pipes of steel” (Los Angeles Times). As one record executive put it\, “Mandy Barnett is a song’s best friend.”\nBarnett first gained national prominence as the original star of one of the first “jukebox” musicals\, Always…Patsy Cline at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium. Barnett\, as Cline\, performs on the original cast soundtrack album and is the only actress to have played the role on the historic Ryman stage where Cline’s legend began. The Ryman shows sold out nightly and received rave reviews\, and Barnett has wowed critics and audiences ever since with her concerts and recordings. \nBarnett’s critically lauded albums include I’ve Got a Right to Cry\, named the “Top Country Album” by Rolling Stone in the year of its release and produced by renowned Nashville Sound pioneer Owen Bradley\, who also produced Cline’s most loved chart-toppers (as well as producing Loretta Lynn\, Brenda Lee\, and k.d. lang). And Rolling Stone continued to honor this landmark album\, placing it in 2019 on two of its “best of” lists of seminal classic country works. \nWith a string of acclaimed country albums\, such as her self-titled Warner Bros. debut\, her Christmas celebration Winter Wonderland\, the Cline-inspired Sweet Dreams\, and I Can’t Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson (a tribute to her friend\, the late Country Music Hall of Fame member)\, there’s no doubt Barnett has mastered that genre and holds it dear to her heart. But Barnett is not one to be musically boxed in. Her 2018 Strange Conversation album\, an Americana blend of roots\, pop\, and R&B tunes\, includes a duet with John Hiatt and a soulful rendition of Neil Sedaka’s My World Keeps Slipping Away\, which Sedaka himself sent to Barnett to record. AllMusic hails Strange Conversation as the “richest record of her career: surprising\, lively\, and deeply felt\,” and The Philadelphia Inquirer\, which listed Strange Conversation among the best country/roots albums of 2018\, notes that Barnett “takes a disparate collection of pop\, soul\, and rock numbers and makes a riveting personal statement.” \nAs further testament to her diversity\, Barnett sang on the SpongeBob SquarePants album The Best Day Ever (sharing the spotlight with the likes of Brian Wilson\, Tommy Ramone\, and Flaco Jimenez) and often incorporates a Great American Songbook standard or two into her live shows. When asked about her favorite composer\, Barnett’s as likely to cite Cole Porter or George Gershwin as she is Willie Nelson or Dolly Parton.\nIn fact\, along the lines of highlighting Barnett’s range\, her 2020 A Nashville Songbook\, an album of reimagined\, multi-generational pop and country gems produced by Fred Mollin (producer of Johnny Mathis\, Kris Kristofferson\, Jimmy Webb\, etc.)\, was inspired by Barnett’s popular “Nashville Songbook” concert. \nEvery Star Above\, Barnett’s most recent album (also produced by Mollin)\, celebrates and reworks selections from Billie Holiday’s Lady In Satin\, with original arrangements by the late legend Sammy Nestico. Variety magazine named Every Star Above one of the best albums of 2021. \nBarnett is equally as comfortable on the Grand Ole Opry and stages with symphony orchestras\, having recently performed solo concerts with the Nashville Symphony\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, and the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast highlighting her “Nashville Songbook” repertoire. Barnett made her New York City cabaret debut at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2019 with an acoustic version of her “Nashville Songbook.” \nBarnett’s music has been featured in many major film and television soundtracks (most recently\, in The CW Network’s series “The Flash”)\, including projects starring Clint Eastwood\, Tommy Lee Jones\, Martin Sheen\, Reese Witherspoon\, Matthew Broderick\, Sigourney Weaver\, Ellen Burstyn\, Bill Paxton\, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Besides soundtrack work\, Barnett often contributes tracks to other types of musical compilations\, and she has appeared on “The Tonight Show\,” “The Late Show\,” “CBS Sunday Morning\,” PBS’s “Sessions at West 54th\,” PBS’s “Bluegrass Underground\,” and numerous other programs. \nIn 2020\, Barnett came full circle with her East Tennessee roots. She joined a select group of music luminaries running the gamut from Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift in being honored by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development with a Tennessee Music Pathways marker. Erected in Barnett’s hometown\, Crossville\, the historic marker celebrates Barnett’s contributions in making Tennessee the “Soundtrack of America.”\nAmong the many publications praising Barnett’s talents\, the Chicago Tribune calls Barnett “a torch singer in the grandest sense of the word.” Time\, People\, Billboard\, Rolling Stone\, and other major media have likewise extolled Barnett’s world-class vocals\, “natural musicality” (People)\, “big\, silky\, expressive voice” (Billboard)\, and “vocal finesse” (New York Times). USA Today calls Barnett one of Nashville’s “finest classic country and torch singers\,” while the Austin Chronicle notes that “when people start talking about Mandy Barnett\, eventually the word ‘amazing’ gets used.” \nVisit www.facebook.com/mandybarnettmusic\, and www.twitter.com/mandybarnett to learn more about Mandy.

DESCRIPTION:Youth Education Concert \nOur Musical World \nJanuary 24\, 2024 \n2 SHOWS: 9:30am and 11am \nIt is fascinating to contemplate the nature of our world\, and one of the most intriguing aspects of it is the prevalence of sound and vibration. And when we look to the wonders of nature\, we find ourselves surrounded by a symphony of sounds that can transport us to another world. Whether it’s the Flight of the Bumble Bee\, the haunting melody of The Swan from Carnival of the Animals\, or the electrifying Thunder and Lightning Polka\, there is no shortage of musical adventure to be had in the natural world. So let us open our ears to the wonders around us and marvel at the incredible power of sound and vibration. \nReservation | PDF

Clayton practiced on a synthesizer at home until he found an old upright piano on the street that an elementary school had thrown away; that would become his practice piano for the next six years\, until the Lang Lang Foundation donated a new piano to him when he was 17. \nHe credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. As he describes it\, the “3rd Street Music School jump-started my music education; the Young People’s Choir taught me phrasing and voicing; the Juilliard Outreach Music Advancement Program introduced me to formal and rigorous piano training\, which enabled me to get into Juilliard Pre-College; the Morningside Music Bridge validated my talent and elevated my self-confidence; the Boy’s Club of New York exposed me to jazz; and the Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.” \nRecent and upcoming highlights of Clayton’s burgeoning career include appearances with the Calgary Philharmonic\, Chicago Sinfonietta\, and the Fort Worth\, Louisville\, Lansing and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras; as well as recitals at the Phillips Collection Concert Series in Washington\, DC\, Foundation Louis Vuitton Auditorium in Paris\, Bad Kissinger Sommer Festival and BeethovenFest in Germany\, Colour of Music Festival\, Ravinia Festival and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.  He has been featured on NPR\, WUOL\, and WQXR\, and appeared in the “GRAMMY® Salute to Classical Music” Concert at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium. \nHe now studies in the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree Program\, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory under Wha Kyung Byun. And his accolades along the way have been numerous – in addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022\, he was named a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist\, as well as a 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. He also received a jury discretionary award at the 2015 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival. \n

SUMMARY:A Broadway Celebration: Melissa Errico Sings Sondheim
DESCRIPTION:Pops 2 \nMarch 16\, 2024 at 7:30PM \nSoutheast Texas is about to experience the unique talents of one of America’s supreme songstresses; Melissa Errico.  Melissa Errico is a woman of stage\, screen\, and song—a great interpreter of classic musicals and modern music alike\, as well as a sparkling writer\, recording artist\, and film/television actress. \nFew singers have had the blessings of Stephen Sondheim\, Michel Legrand\, and other artists of popular music that led to such notoriety.  Major newspapers such as the NY Times and The Wall Street Journal have deemed her recordings of such composers as the finest interpreter of Sondheim’s music. \nYet\, to rest on such laurels would miss her other accomplishments such as TV appearances\, a Tony Award nomination for her Broadway appearance in Amour\, performances in My Fair Lady\, Dracula\, and other Sondheim shows.  Along with her many appearances singing and playing Sondheim\, she is also closely associated with the music of Michel Legrand—having starred in his sole Broadway show\, Amour\, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times and was then invited to become the sole American performer to participate in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April 2019 at Paris’s Le Grand Rex Theatre. \nTonight’s concert will be akin to a musical travelog with stories of featured composers\, famous and cherished music\, and the musical stories behind their creations. “Blindingly glamorous…she delivers Broadway and movie songs with a whopping authority. She can take a Broadway ballad to the moon and back!”— Stephen Holden\, The New York Times \nGet Tickets \nSponsored by \n \nArtist Sponsor: \nS.L. Greenberg\, in memory of Natalie Greenberg \n\n \nSpotify Playlist \nBio: \n“The Maria Callas of American musical theater\,” as Opera News has called her\, referencing both her silken voice and dramatic\, expressive intensity\, Melissa Errico is an actress\, singer\, and author. First known for her starring roles on Broadway\, she has since become a concert\, cabaret and recording artist as well; her 2018 album Sondheim Sublime was called by The Wall Street Journal “The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded.” Along with her many appearances singing and playing Sondheim\, she is also closely associated with the music of Michel Legrand—having starred in his sole Broadway show\, Amour\, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times\, and was then invited to become the sole American performer to participate in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April 2019 at Paris’s Le Grand Rex Theatre\, work that led one critic to announce that\, “Errico is\, and will continue to be\, the premier interpreter of the musical legacy of Michel Legrand.” Her album of Legrand’s music\, Legrand Affair Deluxe Edition\, appeared in 2019. \nIn the past few years her gifts and ambitions as a writer have become increasingly expressed\, with a series of much-talked-of essays in The New York Times\, touching\, with wit\, wisdom and insider mischief\, on the many unseen aspects of the theatrical profession\, from the pleasures and pains of being a “terminal ingenue” to the ambiguities of auditioning to the sheer pleasure of being fitted for a costume\, post-pandemic. She is currently at work on a memoir that will include and expand on these “Scenes from An Acting Life”\, as the Times\, in a rubric specially invented for her work\, calls them. \nMelissa Errico is a Tony Award-nominated Broadway star—an actor\, singer and author — who contributes regularly to The New York Times in an essay series called “Scenes From An Acting Life.” The Wall Street Journal recently referred to her as a “nonpareil cabaret singer.” \nAs a musical theater actress\, she starred on Broadway in such musicals as My Fair Lady where The New York Times called her Eliza Doolittle “beguiling\,” Anna Karenina\, High Society as Tracy Lord\, Amour (Tony-nominated for Best Actress)\, Dracula\, White Christmas in the Rosemary Clooney role of Betty\, and as Cosette in Les Misérables. Melissa has maintained a constant TV presence throughout her career\, starring in Darren Star’s Central Park West\, steady guest roles\, and most recently playing recurring roles on Showtime’s Billions and Cinemax’s The Knick. She appeared in featured films such as Frequency with Dennis Quaid\, Life Or Something Like It as Angelina Jolie’s best friend\, Loverboy directed by Kevin Bacon\, and others. At The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles\, she starred in The Sound of Music\, My Fair Lady with John Lithgow\, and Camelot opposite Jeremy Irons\, which they revived for one night on Broadway. She also starred in non-musical roles in such plays as The Importance of Being Earnest\, Shaw’s Candida and Wally Shawn’s Aunt Dan and Lemon at The New Group. \nOff-Broadway\, she has performed the role of Sharon in Finian’s Rainbow three times (the subject of her debut essay for The New York Times)\, and starred in On A Clear Day You Can See Forever at The Irish Repertory Theatre to great acclaim. She has five Drama Desk nominations\, a Lucille Lortel Award\, two Helen Hayes nominations\, four Drama League Honors\, and a Tony Award nomination. She was honored with a Sardi’s caricature and also served a term on the National Endowment For The Arts. \nMelissa has released several studio recordings including her debut on EMI Records produced by Arif Mardin entitled Blue Like That. Her 2018 album\, Sondheim Sublime\, was called by The Wall Street Journal “The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded\,” and led to sold-out concert dates around the country–from Ravinia to Caramoor and Wolftrap–and in London. She has sung many concerts (of Sondheim music as well as other repertoire such as Rodgers & Hammerstein\, Scott Frankel\, film evenings with Michael Feinstein\, and more) at the 92nd Street Y\, Birdland Jazz Club\, Feinstein’s/54 Below\, Joe’s Pub\, Carnegie Hall\, Town Hall and Lincoln Center’s Allen Room. \nErrico’s history with Sondheim began when he selected her to star as Dot in Sunday In The Park With George at The Kennedy Center\, then as Clara in Passion at Classic Stage Company\, and then in the New York City Center Encores! production of Do I Hear A Waltz? In 2020\, she sang “Children and Art” in the Sondheim 90th Birthday Concert Take Me To The World\, and was featured on PBS television in a documentary special in which she sang “Finishing The Hat” and discussed Sondheim and his lyrics with Adam Gopnik and Raúl Esparza for Poetry in America. \nIn addition to Sondheim\, nothing in her work has been more constant than her association with composer Michel Legrand. Having starred in his Broadway show\, Amour\, she went on to collaborate with him on the iconic album Legrand Affair. After his death in 2019\, she was asked to write an extended eulogy in the The New York Times and then to expand it (in translation) for La Regle Du Jeu\, an esteemed political and cultural magazine in Paris. Melissa was invited to be the sole American performer in the two-night musical memorial to Legrand held in April 2019 at Paris’s Le Grand Rex Theatre. At that time\, Warner Music/Ghostlight Records reissued her symphonic album\, which Legrand arranged and conducted\, as Legrand Affair (Deluxe Edition). \nThe Wall Street Journal described her Michel Legrand tribute concert Amour & After; “One of the most moving and even thrilling cabaret shows I’ve ever seen. When Miss Errico sings the work of the late and much-missed Michel Legrand\, you just want to climb up inside one of her songs and stay there for the rest of your life.” \nAt the height of the pandemic\, Melissa was exceptionally busy\, offering multiple live-streams and conversations and publishing essays for Variety\, Playbill\, The Purist Magazine\, Theatermania and The New York Times. She taught master classes for students across the country and produced two IGTV series: The Honest Cook: Cooking and Mischief and How Do We Go On Singing?\, which grew to fourteen 45-minute episodes consisting of interviews and performances in which she aimed to re-moralize the singing community with in-depth in conversations with professionals and educators. She offered remote solo concerts\, including with Seth Rudetsky for Mercyhurst Institute and the full-scale live holiday special Season For Joy filmed with four cameras on stage at The Bay Street Theater\, hailed as “all style\, class and holiday spirit.” Melissa co-starred in a fully produced green screen musical of Meet Me in St. Louis for the Irish Repertory Theatre\, which she chronicled in The New York Times. She had a 3-part livestream concert series with New York’s French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) Love\, Desire & Mystery in collaboration with The New Yorker essayist Adam Gopnik\, which is available on-demand. Of her work in this series\, one critic said\, “Melissa is piercing\, probing\, and at the absolute height of her vocal and interpretive powers. Errico here reaffirms her status as one of the most intuitive musical theatre actresses of her generation. There is seemingly no limit to Errico’s empathetic range.” (BroadwayWorld) \nIn 2021\, she also taught masterclasses for CUNY and HB Studio\, joined a forum on Women In Theater (hosted by New York Theatre Barn)\, and moderated a program about gender for an international conference for The American Songbook Foundation. She performed summer concerts in New Jersey\, Connecticut\, Provincetown\, and more. She has written a play currently in development for The Irish Repertory Theatre and is working on a book expanding on her New York Times column–tentatively titled\, “Terminal Ingenue.” An album titled Out Of The Dark: The Film Noir Project—inspired by the songs of film noir—is due February 2022. \nShe is married to Patrick McEnroe and they have three daughters and a Yorkie named Pepper.

SUMMARY:A 5th of Tchaikovsky and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series I \nSeptember 21\, 2024 at 7:30PM \nWagner: Die Meistersinger \nBeethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 \nTchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 \n  \nGuest Artist: Philippe Bianconi \n  \nChelsea Tipton II\, Conductor \n  \nSponsored by: \n \nSingle Tickets on sale September 1st! \n  \nPhilippe Bianconi: the smoldering passion under the ivory \nIt is from Italy that he takes his name and the passion concealed within him\, which gives him his vibrancy when he is on stage. The passion that overwhelms his audience. Italy sings in him with the colors of its language\, so familiar to him\, of its Mediterranean exuberance in which his childhood was bathed. But it was in Nice that Philippe Bianconi was born and raised\, and it was France that molded him. Which is why artist and man alike are a blend of poise and ardour\, discretion and inner flame\, clothed in an elegance and a luminosity that may be read in his presence\, in his eyes\, and can be savored when he is at the piano. \nAs a young man\, he progressed by leaps and bounds\, propelled into international competitions by Pierre Cochereau as soon as he left the Nice Conservatoire. His career path was marked out from the day he entered the class of Simone Delbert-Février\, a student of Marguerite Long and Robert Casadesus. ‘Sing!’\, ‘Listen!’: even today\, he can still hear the injunctions of that refined\, enthusiastic woman\, stirred by an inner fire\, and he utters them in his turn to the students he trains at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. On the byways of those early years\, he met Gaby Casadesus: with her he put the finishing touches to the purity of style\, the clarity of musical expression he had cultivated since the start of his musical education. With the Russian pianist Vitalij Margulis\, he found that density of sound which is his alone\, and drew from the innermost recesses of the text\, from the depths of the harmonies\, that expressiveness which he always places at the service of meaning. And then: two birds with one stone! Having won First Prize at the Robert Casadesus Competition in Cleveland\, then Second Prize at the Van Cliburn Competition\, he triumphed at Carnegie Hall\, and his American career was launched . . . Then came Europe\, France\, the world\, in recital or alongside today’s most eminent musicians. And\, still following in the footsteps of Gaby and Robert Casadesus\, but also of Nadia Boulanger\, it was only natural that he should succeed Philippe Entremont as artistic director of the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau for five years. \nIn concert\, the vibration of the air when silence fills the hall is precious to him\, liberating and inspiring. He sometimes takes on the most incredible challenges\, such as playing the two Brahms concertos in one evening. When he returns to his corner of paradise somewhere in the south\, between the sea and the mountains\, he remembers his youth\, his parents who took him to the opera\, and the love for the voice that he felt at a very early age and that will never leave him. He remembers Hermann Prey\, whom he met at the age of twenty-two\, and Schubert\, who brought them together on record and\, for eight years\, on the great stages of the world\, the Wigmore Hall\, La Scala\, Munich\, New York . . . Then his piano sings\, breathes\, becomes body and soul. And Chopin\, Schumann\, Brahms\, not to mention his beloved French masters\, Debussy and Ravel\, in sublime abandonment\, confide the secrets of their treasures to this musician-poet. \nPhilippe Bianconi \nConcert Sponsors (1)
