Having collaborated with 300 orchestras\, Sords has been cited for combining visceral virtuosity with a ravishing tone\, while international critics endorse Sords as “a fully formed artist” (Kalisz-Poland News)\, “utterly radiant” (Canada’s Arts Forum)\, and “exceptionally heartfelt and soulful” (St. Maarten’s Daily Herald). Closer to home\, ClevelandClassical.com gushed: “the stunner of the afternoon was a breathless but magnificently controlled performance of Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” sonata\, which Sords charged through with giddy aplomb. Sords impressed with his total command of technique\, consummate musicianship and bravura as he tossed of scads of notes and sang out like a diva – he and Eriko Izumida kept the audience in the palm of their hands all afternoon.” Sords has received numerous awards and distinctions reflecting his career trajectory\, including the 2012 Pittsburgh Concert Society Career Grant and the 2005 National Shirley Valentin Award\, and is one of the most prolific American violin soloists on the circuit today. \n  \nConcert Conversation

SUMMARY:Youth Education Concert
DESCRIPTION:Music and Nature\n \nSmith                        Star Spangled Banner \nBeethoven               Symphony No. 6\, Movement 4 \nHaydn                       Piano Concerto No. 11 in D major\, 1st movement \nSeth Weeks\, piano \nKorsakov                  Flight of the Bumblebee \nDe Falla                    The Ritual Fire Dance \nHummel                   Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major \nEthan Williamson\, trumpet \nRossini                      William Tell Overture \n  \nThe sounds of the natural world have been an integral part of our culture. All the world is sound or vibration. From bees humming to the sound of a rainstorm\, the same vibrations that make music surround us in nature. Great composers often used nature as the backdrop for their works\, such as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons or Johannes Brahms c minor Symphony. \nIn our education program\, we will look at how various composers use the sounds of the orchestra to manifest the images of nature. The William Tell Overture takes us on through a storm\, to pastures of fields ending with the ever-familiar Lone Ranger gallop of horses at the end. Beethoven Pastoral Symphony looks at the thunderstorm elements in detail\, and the Ritual Fire Dance was used to worship the Fire God where Gypsies would form a large circle around their campfire at midnight to dance. Flight of the Bumble Bee is\, of course\, just the Flight of the Bumble Bee! \nOur concerto winners from 2020 and 2021 will be joining the orchestra. \nSeth Weeks\, 2020 Concerto winner \nEthan Williamson\, 2021 Concerto winner \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis year\, the concert will be videoed and released to area schools and educators. SUMMARY:“The Carnival of the Animals” with Shangri La Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join Shangri La Gardens\, the Symphony of Southeast Texas\, and the Lutcher Theater for a virtual learning opportunity where music meets nature.  Featuring The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns\, we engage our active listening skills to find the similarities between the sounds of music and Mother Earth. Through this lesson we integrate the arts and sciences\, discovering the many characters of nature and animals that can be replicated through music. \nThis two-part video series features a follow-along classroom booklet designed to keep your students engaged\, while Maestro Tipton leads the Symphony of Southeast Texas through this exciting piece. Critical thinking skills will be utilized and practiced\, as the animals featured in Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals are compared to the animals found at Shangri La Gardens. \nBoth videos can be accessed below. We look forward to bringing the Symphony of Southeast Texas and Shangri La Gardens into your classroom! \nThe Carnival of the Shangri La Gardens Animals classroom booklet can be previewed at the bottom of the page. \n  \n  \nPart 1: The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns performed by SOST\n \nPart 2: The Carnival of the Shangri La Gardens Animals\n \n  \nThe Carnival of the Shangri La Gardens Animals classroom booklet can be downloaded/previewed below. \nDownload | PDF \nShangri La Booklet \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pipe Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series IV\nPoulenc: Organ Concerto \, g minor\nSaint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 in c minor (organ)\nGuest Artist: Dr. Katya McMahan\, Organ\nThe pipe organ is often called “The King of Instruments” as it embodies a full complement of orchestral sounds. More often heard in churches throughout the land\, the organ also doubled in theaters as a prelude to movies.  Beaumont’s Jefferson Theatre was the last of such “Theatre Organs” frequently played before movies and sometimes accompanying silent films.  Sadly\, the Julie Rogers Theatre was built without “the king” due to the onerous task and expense of upkeep. To the rescue\, the age of technology\, we have an electronic instrument that enables SOST to perform such grand works as we’ll hear: The Poulenc Organ Concerto as well as Camille Saint-Saen’s Third Symphony\, commonly known as the Organ Symphony. \nFrancis Poulenc was a novice at writing for organ\, yet a commission\, followed by a spiritual journey\, served as the inspiration for his first such work. To do so\, he studied the famous organ works of JS Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude to learn the form of such compositions as well as guidance from famed organist Maurice Duraflé to learn the colorful capabilities of the instrument. \nSaint-Saens’ symphony no. 3 is also known as his organ symphony\, as it treats the pipe organ like a concerto soloist. The themes from the final movement are frequently used in films such as Babe\, Babe: Pig in the City\, and originally in Impressions of France-also heard at EPCOT in Disney World. \n2 Shows: 1pm and 7:30pm \nLive Stream option will also be available for the 7:30pm performance. \nGet Tickets \n$32-55 \nSponsored by: \n \nGuest Artist sponsored by: Sandra Clark \nKatya Gotsdiner-McMahan\, born in Russia\, holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in organ and musicology from the Moscow Conservatory\, including Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance\, Ph.D. in musicology\, and a Master of Music degree in church music with organ emphasis from the University of Kansas. \nShe has participated in master classes with Ludger Lomann\, Jos van der Kooj\, Olivier Latry and James Higdon. Gotsdiner won prizes at the First Kikta International Organ Competition (2005)\, the First Beedlaw Moscow Festival of the Young Artists (2007)\, the Fifth International Organ Music Festival-Competition “Gatchina-St. Petersburg” (2004)\, the Sixth International Organ Competition Marcello Galanti (2005\, Italy)\, and the First All Russian Festival-Competition for Young Organists “Soli Deo Gloria” (2007). \nShe has performed at concert halls and churches in Moscow and throughout Russia\, as well as in Austria\, Italy\, The Netherlands and the United States. She has been featured on Russian state radio and television\, including a performance with the Russian National Symphony Orchestra\, and has performed and lectured about Russian organ music at the University of California Los Angeles\, the University of Kansas\, and in Amsterdam. In June 2014 her lecture was featured at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Boston. \nWhile on the Central Coast of California she performed piano\, organ\, harpsichord\, and celesta with the Lompoc Valley Master Chorale\, North County Chorus\, San Luis Obispo Symphony\, Symphony of the Vines\, Santa Maria Philharmonic\, San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra\, and San Luis Obispo Opera. She also held the positions of Music director\, Choir director and Organist at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of San Luis Obispo. \nCurrently\, she is an Assistant Director of Music and Organist at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Beaumont\, Texas. You can view the traditional worship with choir and organ each Sunday at 10:30 am (CST) live on KFDM Channel 6. \n

SUMMARY:American Musical Soundscapes
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series III               \nJohann Strauss II: Greeting to America\nCopland: Appalachian Spring\nGershwin: Rhapsody in Blue\nGuest Artist:  Gabriela Martinez\, Piano Soloist \nOur third Classics Series opens with a salute to America! Once again\, three vantage points are illustrated through a diverse musical journey. We begin with the internationally famous waltz King\, Johann Strauss II\, who was famous for writing dance like pieces reflecting his travels. His coming to America salutes our homeland and beginning our concert. \nWhat could be more American and dance-inspired than Aaron Copland’s salute to Martha Graham’s modern ballet\, featuring the music of the Appalachian Mountains. No gifts were simpler\, yet elegant\, than this American homage. \nThe opening measures of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue have become a musical icon describing the highlights of his beloved NYC. Blues\, jazz\, tender melodies all bring us back to Broadway in Manhattan. \nOur soloist\, Gabriela Martinez\, is quickly becoming an internationally acclaimed pianist. Hailing from Venezuela\, she has won several international prizes\, has played with orchestras around the world and has had pieces written for her premiere solo CD\, Amplified Soul. \nNOTE: This concert was originally scheduled for February 20th and had to be postponed due to weather issues.  \nLive Stream option will also be available. \nTickets are $40 and available by calling the office at 409-892-2257 \nSponsored by: Rosine McFaddin Wilson \nGuest Artist sponsored by: Regina Rogers\, in loving memory of Van and Rildia Bee Cliburn and Julie and Ben Rogers and to honor their special friendship.

SUMMARY:Soundscapes from My Homeland
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series II\nMozart: Horn Concerto No. 3\nDvorak: Symphony No. 7\, op. 70\, d minor\nGuest Artist: William VerMeulen \nMozart’s horn concerti were written for a close friend Joseph Leutgelb\, a hornist who also was a cheese monger.  Leutgelb moved from Salzburg to Vienna\, where he and Mozart collaborated quite frequently.  Often known for his pranks\, Mozart often wrote insulting comments in the solo parts\, yet it was Leutbelb’s significant mastery of the horn\, which led to many passages that were considered impossible to the average musician\, played with style and grace.  Such examples were stopped notes and low bass notes\, not commonly played by many\, yet introduced by Leutbelb on the natural\, or valveless horn.  There was some confusion as to the date of the concerto with reference to the Köchel numbers.  Originally\, the date was 1783\, but research showed it to be 1787.  It follows a typical concerto format of fast\, slow fast movements. \nOften considered his finest symphony\, Antonin Dvorak’s masterpiece Symphony no. 7 was an effort to raise the awareness and reputation of Czech composers in the eyes of the Austrian-Germanic world. While an acclaimed composer in his native Prague and America\, Dvorak’s melodic and orchestral talents helped demonstrate how folk melodies can add to the splendor of symphonic music loved around the world. \nWilliam VerMeulen Bio: \nWorld-renowned soloist. Virtuoso orchestral and chamber musician. Horn teaching guru. These are all descriptions of William VerMeulen\, arguably among the most celebrated hornists in the world. Regarded as one of the most influential horn teachers of all time\, Mr. VerMeulen is Professor of Horn at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University\, Faculty at Miami’s New World Symphony and Visiting Professor of Horn at the Eastman School of Music. Hailed as “one of today’s superstars of the international brass scene\,” William VerMeulen has risen to become America’s leading horn soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician. \n2 shows: 1pm and 7:30pm \nGet Tickets \n$32-55 \nSponsored by \n         \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cinematic Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series I\nBach Brandenburg Concerto No. 3\, BWV 1048\, G Major \nGrieg Holberg Suite\, op. 40 \nDvorak Wind Serenade\, op. 22\, d minor \nSymphonic music often comes to us in a variety of presentations\, whether while watching a movie\, hearing it in the concert hall\, or even part of a television commercial.  The end results are quite similar; they create an ambience that helps tell a story.  Our first concert presents three different pictures or scenarios. What a great way of illustrating our music to you! \nAs a season opener\, this line up of compositions might seem underwhelming\, although spirited and warm with intent!  Please understand that our revisions have an additional program in mind\, to comply with the safety of containing the spread of the Covid-19 virus.  Over the course of the season\, the size of the orchestra will grow progressively larger so that we can protect our musicians and guest artists. \nThe Brandenburg concerti were related to themes from previously written concerti of Bach\, just orchestrated for a variety of smaller or chamber ensembles. The third concerto was such a setting allowing for spacious assembly of instruments.  It is a spirited dance-like structure with the middle movement seeming like an improvisatory cadenza\, resolving to yet another dance. \nGrieg wrote his Holberg suite originally as a piano suite then translated it to a string orchestration. A master of historical composition\, Grieg uses 18th century dance forms\, expressed however in 19th century language. To showcase the virtuosity of SOST’s wind section\, Maestro Tipton features Dvorak’s charming suite of old-world dances illustrating a combination of aristocracy and common folk styles.  A concert to welcome back our audience with a variety of musical styles! \nDue to the Julie Rogers Theatre not being open yet\, this event will be a Live Stream event. Season Ticket holders will receive a link to view the performance on the day of the event. Thank you for understanding! \n  \nConcert Sponsored by \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Music is usually the background of our Christmas celebrations\, and SOST has it all-favorite carols\, sacred works from all religious traditions to music from the Nutcracker or other holiday gems. Meant to help our community get into the holiday spirit\, Home for the Holidays is a family tradition here in Southeast Texas. \nGuest artist: Carmen Bradford \n2019 Grammy Nominee\, Carmen Bradford\, was born in Austin\, Texas and raised in Altadena\, California. Carmen Bradford grew up with music in her home and in her heart. It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the footsteps of her great family legacy being the daughter of legendary coronetist/composer Bobby Bradford and world-renown jazz vocalist/composer/author Melba Joyce. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and his Big Band; Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band in the 1940s; and sang with the Ink Spots\, making Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians. She has carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing an integral role in this uniquely American art form called Jazz. SUMMARY:French Pairings
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series IV\nSaint Saens: Samson et Dalila: Bacchanale \nFaure: Requiem \nSoprano soloist: Abigail Dueppen\nBaritone soloist: Dalton Woody \nRavel: Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 \nFeaturing: SOST Chorus and Lamar University Choir \n \nAbigail Dueppen                                               Dalton Woody \nCo-Sponsors:\n                      \nOverview:\nOur season concludes with a concert of pairings by French composers. Pairings focus on two subjects: Samson and Delilah\, Daphnis and Chloe\, and the artistic pairing of orchestra and chorus\, represented by the Faure Requiem. \nThe Bacchanal\, perhaps the most often played section of Saint Saen’s opera\, Samson and Delilah begins with a sensuous dance that draws Samson into Delilah’s arms\, only to be tricked as she cuts his hair. The balance of the piece is quite fiery in that he calls upon the gods to restore his powers. One of the greatest scores of ballet writing in the twentieth century is Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe. Chloe\, in the first two scenes of this ballet\, is abducted by a group of pirates. Her rescue by Pan\, a god\, is represented by a quartet of flutes in a lyrical picturesque motif and in which the musical climax builds up to Daphnis discovering her\, then falls into his arms. An excellent demonstration of Ravel’s masterful orchestration technique\, it describes such full splendor\, especially as he utilizes a chanting choir to augment the orchestral colors. \nFaure’s requiem is a typical requiem mass format\, yet that is a point of departure; Faure considered this epic piece a portrayal of eternal rest\, rather than a mourning of death. (It has often been called a lullaby of death given its serene quality.) There is no dedication. As a church organist\, Faure performed at many funerals which probably inspired him to write a piece that focused on the peace and restful state of dying\, rather than a mournful approach for the musical form. It does\, however\, pair the full spectrum of orchestral writing with beautiful choral writing.
