SUMMARY:Soundscapes from My Homeland
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series II\nMozart: Horn Concerto No. 3\nDvorak: Symphony No. 7\, op. 70\, d minor\nGuest Artist: William VerMeulen \nMozart’s horn concerti were written for a close friend Joseph Leutgelb\, a hornist who also was a cheese monger.  Leutgelb moved from Salzburg to Vienna\, where he and Mozart collaborated quite frequently.  Often known for his pranks\, Mozart often wrote insulting comments in the solo parts\, yet it was Leutbelb’s significant mastery of the horn\, which led to many passages that were considered impossible to the average musician\, played with style and grace.  Such examples were stopped notes and low bass notes\, not commonly played by many\, yet introduced by Leutbelb on the natural\, or valveless horn.  There was some confusion as to the date of the concerto with reference to the Köchel numbers.  Originally\, the date was 1783\, but research showed it to be 1787.  It follows a typical concerto format of fast\, slow fast movements. \nOften considered his finest symphony\, Antonin Dvorak’s masterpiece Symphony no. 7 was an effort to raise the awareness and reputation of Czech composers in the eyes of the Austrian-Germanic world. While an acclaimed composer in his native Prague and America\, Dvorak’s melodic and orchestral talents helped demonstrate how folk melodies can add to the splendor of symphonic music loved around the world. \nWilliam VerMeulen Bio: \nWorld-renowned soloist. Virtuoso orchestral and chamber musician. Horn teaching guru. These are all descriptions of William VerMeulen\, arguably among the most celebrated hornists in the world. Regarded as one of the most influential horn teachers of all time\, Mr. VerMeulen is Professor of Horn at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University\, Faculty at Miami’s New World Symphony and Visiting Professor of Horn at the Eastman School of Music. Hailed as “one of today’s superstars of the international brass scene\,” William VerMeulen has risen to become America’s leading horn soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician. \n2 shows: 1pm and 7:30pm \nGet Tickets \n$32-55 \nSponsored by \n         \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cinematic Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series I\nBach Brandenburg Concerto No. 3\, BWV 1048\, G Major \nGrieg Holberg Suite\, op. 40 \nDvorak Wind Serenade\, op. 22\, d minor \nSymphonic music often comes to us in a variety of presentations\, whether while watching a movie\, hearing it in the concert hall\, or even part of a television commercial.  The end results are quite similar; they create an ambience that helps tell a story.  Our first concert presents three different pictures or scenarios. What a great way of illustrating our music to you! \nAs a season opener\, this line up of compositions might seem underwhelming\, although spirited and warm with intent!  Please understand that our revisions have an additional program in mind\, to comply with the safety of containing the spread of the Covid-19 virus.  Over the course of the season\, the size of the orchestra will grow progressively larger so that we can protect our musicians and guest artists. \nThe Brandenburg concerti were related to themes from previously written concerti of Bach\, just orchestrated for a variety of smaller or chamber ensembles. The third concerto was such a setting allowing for spacious assembly of instruments.  It is a spirited dance-like structure with the middle movement seeming like an improvisatory cadenza\, resolving to yet another dance. \nGrieg wrote his Holberg suite originally as a piano suite then translated it to a string orchestration. A master of historical composition\, Grieg uses 18th century dance forms\, expressed however in 19th century language. To showcase the virtuosity of SOST’s wind section\, Maestro Tipton features Dvorak’s charming suite of old-world dances illustrating a combination of aristocracy and common folk styles.  A concert to welcome back our audience with a variety of musical styles! \nDue to the Julie Rogers Theatre not being open yet\, this event will be a Live Stream event. Season Ticket holders will receive a link to view the performance on the day of the event. Thank you for understanding! \n  \nConcert Sponsored by \n \n

SUMMARY:Home for the Holidays
DESCRIPTION:Music is usually the background of our Christmas celebrations\, and SOST has it all-favorite carols\, sacred works from all religious traditions to music from the Nutcracker or other holiday gems. Meant to help our community get into the holiday spirit\, Home for the Holidays is a family tradition here in Southeast Texas. \nGuest artist: Carmen Bradford \n2019 Grammy Nominee\, Carmen Bradford\, was born in Austin\, Texas and raised in Altadena\, California. Carmen Bradford grew up with music in her home and in her heart. It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the footsteps of her great family legacy being the daughter of legendary coronetist/composer Bobby Bradford and world-renown jazz vocalist/composer/author Melba Joyce. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and his Big Band; Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band in the 1940s; and sang with the Ink Spots\, making Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians. She has carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing an integral role in this uniquely American art form called Jazz. Carmen Bradford is jazz royalty. \nTickets on sale September 3! \nAdults $25/ Students & Seniors (60+) $15 \nConcert Sponsor:                                                                              Guest Artist Sponsor: \n                                                  \n

SUMMARY:French Pairings
DESCRIPTION:Classic Series IV\nSaint Saens: Samson et Dalila: Bacchanale \nFaure: Requiem \nSoprano soloist: Abigail Dueppen\nBaritone soloist: Dalton Woody \nRavel: Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 \nFeaturing: SOST Chorus and Lamar University Choir \n \nAbigail Dueppen                                               Dalton Woody \nCo-Sponsors:\n                      \nOverview:\nOur season concludes with a concert of pairings by French composers. Pairings focus on two subjects: Samson and Delilah\, Daphnis and Chloe\, and the artistic pairing of orchestra and chorus\, represented by the Faure Requiem. \nThe Bacchanal\, perhaps the most often played section of Saint Saen’s opera\, Samson and Delilah begins with a sensuous dance that draws Samson into Delilah’s arms\, only to be tricked as she cuts his hair. The balance of the piece is quite fiery in that he calls upon the gods to restore his powers. One of the greatest scores of ballet writing in the twentieth century is Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe. Chloe\, in the first two scenes of this ballet\, is abducted by a group of pirates. Her rescue by Pan\, a god\, is represented by a quartet of flutes in a lyrical picturesque motif and in which the musical climax builds up to Daphnis discovering her\, then falls into his arms. An excellent demonstration of Ravel’s masterful orchestration technique\, it describes such full splendor\, especially as he utilizes a chanting choir to augment the orchestral colors. \nFaure’s requiem is a typical requiem mass format\, yet that is a point of departure; Faure considered this epic piece a portrayal of eternal rest\, rather than a mourning of death. (It has often been called a lullaby of death given its serene quality.) There is no dedication. As a church organist\, Faure performed at many funerals which probably inspired him to write a piece that focused on the peace and restful state of dying\, rather than a mournful approach for the musical form. It does\, however\, pair the full spectrum of orchestral writing with beautiful choral writing.

SUMMARY:Passionate Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Classics Series III \nWith Pianist\, Claire Huangci \nGrieg: Piano Concerto\, op. 16\, a minor\nClaire Huangci\, piano\nRachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 \nSponsor:\nRosine Wilson \nGuest Artist Sponsor:\nRegina Rogers \nOverview:\nThe Romantic period of music is filled with impressions that sweep the emotions through intense melodies\, harmonies that paint pictures\, and dramatic conclusions that bring audiences to their feet. Our concert tonight includes all of those critical elements in just two grand pieces. Edvard Grieg’s famous piano concerto opens with grand gestures by the pianist\, followed by sweeping melodies in the orchestra. A continual interplay between soloist and orchestra sets the stage for a concerto by which romantic standards are measured. Serge Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony is perhaps his most popular symphony. The themes are heard as often in the concert hall as they are on the radio and the movie screen\, with interpretations as varied as the mediums themselves. Pop singer Eric Carmen put words to the theme of the third movement\, “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again\,” and found it so effective that he once again used a movement from the Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony. The second movement of tonight’s symphony appeared often in the background of movies such as Birdman. Both composers were masters at creating moods and paintings that take listeners to a different\, more gentle and passionate time.

SUMMARY:Pastoral Germanic Settings
DESCRIPTION:Classics Series II \nWith soloist\, Tim Dueppen. \nMendelssohn: Hebrides Overture\nAlbrechtsberger: Concerto for Alto Trombone\nTim Dueppen\, alto trombone\nBeethoven: Symphony No. 6 \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSponsors: \n \nGuest Artist Sponsor:\nNatalie and S.L. Greenberg\nOverview:\nOur second Classics concert takes us to the pastoral and pictorial settings in Europe from land and sea. Whether idyllic countrysides\, vast ocean and islands\, or stately architecture\, Europe\, especially Germany and Scotland\, provided impressive vistas and cultural experiences that inspired the composers featured this evening. Mendelssohn was so taken by a cave from shipside\, on the Scottish Island of Staffa\, that he jotted down two themes that were scenic settings and sent them to his sister Fanny\, a composer as well. Musical painting\, also known as tone paintings\, was one of the most significant additions to the musical soundscape used in the Romantic Period. \nJohann Georg Albrechstberger\, best known as a theorist and music teacher\, was credited for being the mentor of Beethoven and Hummel. The trombone concerto chosen by our SOST soloist\, Tim Dueppen\, is one of the first concerti ever written for this instrument during the classical period. Little is known about the scenic impressions that set the stage for this concerto\, yet upon hearing it\, one can easily think about walking through fields of flowers and meadows. The concerto is written for the Alto Trombone\, the smallest member of the trombone family. Named for its delicate sound\, it is similar to the trumpet used in the classical period. \nBeethoven had a strong love of nature and this symphony best depicts such appreciation. The sixth symphony is the first to be classified as programmatic music with specific movements expressing his impressions of fields\, streams\, country dances\, and storms with the final resolution reflecting a joyous celebration of nature in harmony with itself.

SUMMARY:Ella & Louis\, Great Friends - Great Music
DESCRIPTION:Pops I \nByron Stripling and Carmen Bradford’s chemistry lights up the stage as they take you on a journey through the most famous duets and solos recorded by two of jazz’s greatest legends. Byron and\nCarmen provide a musical reincarnation of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. \n \nFeaturing hits of the Great American Songbook\, they recreate one of the most memorable       collaborations in music history while entertaining and capturing everyone’s heart along the way. \n  \n  \n  \nSponsors \n                           \n \nOverview:\nOne of America’s greatest musical claims to fame is the Great American Songbook. An unofficial collection of songs and genres\, popular song created an “American atmosphere” during the 20s\, 30s and 40s to sooth our psyches. None were greater champions than Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Both artists\, individually and collectively\, had an extensive list of recordings that were the soundtrack of this era. Together they got Americans through the eras of the depression\, war\, and post war. \nTonight’s program\, through the talents of trumpeter Byron Stripling (aka Satchmo) and Carmen Bradford (as Lady Ella)\, takes us on a musical tour of songs like “A-Tisket A-Tasket\,” “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love\,” “Basin Street Blues\,” and those favorite tunes of the Gershwins. Our guests share an authentic collection of arrangements for the duo with our SOST that will have you tapping your feet to Bill Bailey\, and maybe even crooning “Our Love Is Here to Stay” as you leave the Julie Rogers Theatre. \n

SUMMARY:New York\, New York\, Jazz Meets Classics
DESCRIPTION:Classics Series I\nJazz Meets Classics \n  \nBernstein: On the Town\nEllington: Black\, Brown and Beige Suite\nRissman: Newly commissioned work by SOST; Cause of Action\nGershwin: An American in Paris\nFeaturing dancers from Beaumont Civic Ballet. \nPre-Concert Talk: 6:30pm \n\nSponsor\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nGuest Artist Sponsor: Sandra Clark\nOverview:\nIt’s been said that there are only so many notes in a scale\, and that music comes from the result of their order and style. What better setting than New York City\, where so many different styles not only exist but often collaborate with each other. Our concert tonight is a “classic” example of that union. What better composers to represent such sounds-Leonard Bernstein\, George Gershwin\, Duke Ellington\, and our own Nick Rissman? \nOn the Town is a musical tour of this great city through the eyes and actions of three sailors on leave. For his musical style\, Bernstein chose popular song\, then weaved them into a fascinating score utilizing street sounds\, moods and lyrical expressions. Duke Ellington also used the movies as a vehicle to express his study of Negroes coming from Haiti to Savannah during the Revolutionary War. From the original score\, significantly longer\, the composer created a suite of songs for a concert version. Once again\, songs from various genres resulted in orchestral treatments\, relating moods from work songs to spirituals to the blues. Here is an example of how the organization of the same notes convey such different expressions. Local composer\, Nick Rissman\, expresses his sentiments for the Las Vegas of his youth and the change of his hometown in his “Cause of Action.” \nOur concert concludes tonight with George Gershwin\, the celebrated champion of popular song. His portrayal of an American visiting Paris uses themes and sounds to express the tourist’s impressions of Parisian street noises and the grandeur of the sights. The blues section reminds our visitor of his American home as he gets homesick but returns to the sights quickly\, dancing to express his joy de vivre!

SUMMARY:Classics Series 3: "The Elegance of Elgar"
DESCRIPTION:The Elegance of Elgar sweeps us into the romantic period\, but not before a triumphal announcement of the Fanfare for the Common Man by American composer\, Aaron Copland. Originally written as one of the fourteen fanfares\, this theme has prevailed as one of Copland’s signature works. Our journey to the romantic period begins with none other than Franz Liszt\, the period’s preeminent pianist and composer. His first piano concerto is unlike any concerto before in its style and form. Our soloist\, Tomoko Kanamaru\, returns to the Julie Rogers stage demonstrating her demon like virtuosity with elegance and speed. Edward Elgar’s iconic Enigma Variations is a series of 14 musical pictures of friends\, his wife\, his publisher\, and even Elgar himself! \nConcert sponsored by Baptist Hospital. \nArtist sponsored by Gisella Houseman.
