The Symphony of Southeast Texas is committed to the health and safety of everyone who attends our performances, our musicians, staff, volunteers and the community at large. Following the guidelines set out by federal, state and local agencies, the April 4 concert has been postponed.
Led by the talented Maestro Chelsea Tipton II, our fourth and final Classic Series concert of the 67th season will renew the musical spirit in all of us on Saturday, June 27 at the Jefferson Theatre.
Julian Schwarz will not be performing, and there is a change in the music for the evening. We will start with Dvorak’s Carnival Overture. This work is part of a trilogy of overtures with nature, life and love as the central themes. It is a high-spirited overture, somewhat organic in the development of the themes, as they seem to evolve expressing a happy, joyous time of life.
Aaron Copland is most noted for his ballets such as Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo, as well as music for movies. Yet this symphony, his best known, is based upon the unique sound of open intervals and the classic Fanfare for the Common Man. More than any other work, Symphony no. 3 uses themes, harmonies, and characteristic intervals that are unmistakably Copland. Each movement has a signature Copland theme, especially the final movement. This concert, with its heroic overtone, comes to full celebration in this final movement of the season.
Please join us Saturday, on June 27, 2020 at 7:30pm at the Jefferson Theatre for Classic Series IV. This amazing show could not be possible without the support of our Concert Sponsors, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and Total Petroleum. Sponsors like this help the Symphony of Southeast Texas play a role in the education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of all residents of Southeast Texas.
