It was a childhood dream that inspired the name of Matthew Detrick’s music ensemble, Apollo Chamber Players.
Detrick, Symphony of Southeast Texas concertmaster, co-founded the ensemble in 2008 with a mission to weave classical with folk music, exposing audiences to different cultures of the world.
“The name of our group is supposed to be visionary and forward-looking, just like Project Apollo,” Detrick, 36, said. “That’s how I want Apollo Chamber Players to be – leading the way and doing new things while preserving traditions.”
This month, the group of four, which includes Detrick’s wife, Anabel Ramirez, will travel to Cuba to record and perform “Imágenes de Cuba” by composer and Rice University professor Arthur Gottschalk, marking the seventh of 20 commissioned pieces that are part of the ensembles’ 20×2020 project.
