We always have so much fun with this concert because it is the one where we feature a member of the SOST as our soloist. This year we will be presenting our principal trombonist, Dr. Timothy Dueppen. He will be performing the Johann Albrechtsberger Concerto for Alto Trombone. The Alto Trombone is a smaller version of the tenor trombone that is most commonly used in the orchestra. It is a delightful, charming piece that puts on full display the virtuosic range of the instrument.
Albrechtsberger was also the teacher of the composer on the second half of the program by Ludwig Van Beethoven. We will be presenting Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, also known as the “Pastorale Symphony” due to its programmatic content. Beethoven was a lover of nature, and this symphony is filled with sonic images of nature and life. It is more of an expression of a feeling of nature than a painting of nature.
We hope that you can come out to hear the orchestra as we delve into some music from the Classical period of composition and history.
