Many people think that once the final notes of the season are played in the spring, the orchestra simply “goes away” until September. In reality, summer is one of the busiest and most important times of the year for the Symphony of Southeast Texas.
While there may be fewer concerts on stage, a tremendous amount of work is happening behind the scenes to prepare for the upcoming season. Summer is when ideas begin to take shape and plans become reality.
Much of our time is spent building the next concert season — discussing programming, selecting guest artists, reviewing orchestra instrumentation needs, and shaping the artistic vision for the year ahead. Finding the right balance of classical masterworks, pops programming, educational offerings, and community events involves months of thoughtful discussion and collaboration.
There are also many fundraising and sponsorship meetings taking place throughout the summer months. These conversations are vital to keeping the orchestra strong and growing in Southeast Texas. We are deeply grateful to the many businesses, organizations, donors, and supporters who help make our concerts possible.
Behind the scenes, our music library staff is busy preparing music for the upcoming season. We are ordering scores and parts, organizing bowings, making corrections, and ensuring everything is performance-ready for our musicians. It is detailed and often unseen work, but absolutely essential.
Summer is also a time for artistic brainstorming and community outreach planning. We are continually exploring ways to make the orchestra more visible, accessible, and connected to the community through collaborations, special events, education programs, and creative concert experiences.
And of course, summer at SOST would not be complete without one of our favorite traditions, the July 4th Concert!
We invite everyone to join us on July 4 at 8:00 PM at the Julie Rogers Theatre for an evening of patriotic music, celebration, and community spirit. This annual tradition is always one of the highlights of our year and a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to come together and celebrate America through music.
Even during the quieter months, the Symphony of Southeast Texas is always working, planning, creating, and preparing for the next great musical experience. We look forward to sharing another exciting season with you.
