New York, New York… Jazz meets Classics!
The Symphony of Southeast Texas is pleased to announce our first show of the 66th season. Our concert on September 15, 2018 is a “classic” example of the union of music and city life. What better composers to represent such sounds: Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and our own Nick Rissman?
Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town is a musical tour of the great city of New York through the eyes and actions of three sailors on leave. Duke Ellington described the Black, Brown, and Beige Suite as “a parallel to the history of the Negro in America.” Local composer, Nick Rissman, expresses his sentiments for the Las Vegas of his youth and the change of his hometown in his Cause of Action. Our concert concludes tonight with George Gershwin, the celebrated champion of popular song. His portrayal of an American in Paris uses themes and sounds to express the tourist’s impressions of Parisian street noises and the grandeur of the sights.
The Beaumont Civic Ballet is our guest artist for this concert. Under the direction of Monique Zummo Steinhagen and Megan Anderson, during the Gershwin portion of the concert, the ballet will perform along with the Symphony for an amazing production. The following dancers will be performing: Laiken Binagia with Cameron Phelan, Emerie Callas, Karlynn Traylor, Avery Binagia, Olivia de la Madrid, Sophie Madden, Lily Hebert, Jules Williams, Mustapha Williams, and Connor Green.
Please join us Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 7:30pm at the Julie Rogers Theatre for Classic Series I. The amazing show could not be possible without the support of our Concert Sponsor, Goodyear Beaumont Chemical and our Guest Artist Sponsor, Sandra Clark. Sponsors like this help the Symphony of Southeast Texas play a role in the education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of all residents of Southeast Texas.
