The Symphony of Southeast Texas is proud to continue our 71st season, Majestic Visions. The incredible Maestro Chelsea Tipton II, in his 15th season, will lead your SOST orchestra in a wonderful array of favorites, with some new pieces sure to be future classics. We invite you to join us this season to rediscover your Symphony of Southeast Texas!
Our third Classic Series concert on Saturday, February 3rd at the historic Julie Rogers Theatre is titled “The Composer’s Spirit Revisited.” The evening begins with Carlos Simon’s Amen!, a snazzy piece with gospel overtones and references to Jazz that will give us a tour of the composer’s youth.
As tonight’s program continues, you will be immersed in the music of Ravel and Rachmaninoff. Ravel, with his Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, introduces beautiful tonal colors which cradle his haunting themes gently. Then, the most impressive and challenging piano concerto will sweep you away to a place hard to duplicate with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no.3.
Our featured artist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage, expressive power, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. And his accolades along the way have been bountiful: in addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, in 2023 he won the Grand Prize of the inaugural Nina Simone Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a masterful final-round performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, taking home the $50,000 grand prize for his win.
Single tickets for all concerts are on sale now as well and prices range from $36-$62 for the Classic Series and $39-$84 for the Pops Series concerts.
Our deepest thanks go out to our show sponsors Bill Wilson and Regina Rogers. Sponsors like this help the Symphony of Southeast Texas play a role in the education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of all residents of Southeast Texas.
