The Symphony of Southeast Texas is proud to continue our 71st season, Majestic Visions. The incredible Maestro Chelsea Tipton II, in his 15th season, will lead your SOST orchestra in a wonderful array of favorites, with some new pieces sure to be future classics. We invite you to join us this season to rediscover your Symphony of Southeast Texas!
Our second Classic Series concert on Saturday, November 11th at the historic Julie Rogers Theatre is titled Triumph over Tyranny. We will hear celebrated music of Central Europe, specifically, that of Poland, Hungary and thanks to Smetana, Czechoslovakia. We will start with Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, an excellent overture filled with great themes.
Our featured artist, Rodney Marsalis, has enjoyed a celebrated, diverse career reflecting his many talents. He has performed in orchestras around the world, played for great conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, and now leads a unique brass band that reflects his many playing styles, carrying on the tradition of his talented family. Our guest shows that his instrument is perfectly capable of demonstrating virtuosic styles, all thanks to his distinct abilities. He will perform excerpts from Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto, Bach’s Vivaldi Concerto and Clarke’s Carnival of Venice.
The final piece, Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, is a hallmark masterpiece which signaled several milestones of the famed composer. He announced the beginning of his loss of hearing and began writing music that spoke to his ideas with styles that were markedly different than others. So, as you listen tonight, hear the music as the beginning of a new world order of symphonic music.
