The Symphony of Southeast Texas is pleased to announce our second Classic Series concert of the 2020-21 season, Soundscapes. We are excited to get back on stage at the Julie Rogers Theatre and perform for SETX again!
Maestro Chelsea Tipton II will lead the SOST orchestra in Soundscapes from My Homeland at both 1pm and 7:30pm on Saturday, November 21, 2020.
For the first part of the concert, SOST welcomes William VerMeulen performing a well-loved horn concerto, Mozart’s Concerto no. 3 in E flat. Mozart’s horn concerti were written for a close friend Joseph Leutgelb, a hornist who also was a cheese monger. Often known for his pranks, Mozart often wrote insulting comments in the solo parts, yet it was Leutbelb’s significant mastery of the horn which led to many passages that were considered impossible to the average musician, played with style and grace.
William VerMeulen is considered one of the finest horn players and pedagogue throughout the world. Quite an impressive stature for someone his age, yet his accomplishments in orchestral, soloist and pedagogue are notable indeed. VerMeulen has held principal horn positions with Columbus, OH, Honolulu, and Kansas City Symphonies before winning his principal horn post with Houston Symphony in 1990.
The second part of the concert features Antonin Dvorak’s masterpiece Symphony no. 7, often considered his finest symphony, as an effort to raise the awareness and reputation of Czech composers in the eyes of the Austrian-Germanic world. While an acclaimed composer in his native Prague and America, Dvorak’s melodic and orchestral talents helped demonstrate how folk melodies can add to the splendor of symphonic music loved around the world.
For those of that would like to see the show at home, we will also have a live stream concert on YouTube! For only $40 you can experience the wonderful SOST orchestra in the comfort of your living room!
Our deepest thanks go out to our show sponsors, Baptist Hospitals and Total Petroleum as well as our live stream sponsor, UBS. Sponsors like this help the Symphony of Southeast Texas play a role in the education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of all residents of Southeast Texas.
